Neighborhoods: Uptown

Neighborhoods Theater Shopping Music Lakes Recreation Restaurants

One of the easiest neighborhoods to spot from afar, the glowing Uptown Theater sign illuminates this area of town. Uptown’s vibrant scene offers shopping, entertainment and dining with an unmatched, eclectic energy.

Old School Entertainment
Home to handfuls of film and performance theaters, Uptown offers a variety of shows on any given night. One of the oldest surviving movie houses in the Twin Cities, the historic Uptown Theater is the only local film venue to offer balcony seating. The single screen limits a show’s running time to 2 weeks. These exclusive engagements, combined with the theater’s classic décor, make for a retro movie experience.

Both the Uptown Theater and its sister theater, the Lagoon, specialize in independent and foreign films. Lagoon Cinema’s 5 screens allows for longer run times than the Uptown Theater. Located near Lake Calhoun, the Lagoon’s aquatic décor reflects the area’s surroundings.

A Laughing Matter
Need some comic relief? Head to Uptown. The Brave New Workshop, Uptown’s satirical theater, has had audiences rolling in their seats for 50 years. For improvised comedy, ComedySportz involves the audience by taking suggestions and recruiting new comics.

Outdoor Activities
Just a hop, skip and a jump away from the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, Uptown flourishes with recreational activities. For bikers and walkers, the Midtown Greenway provides access to almost any location parallel to Lake Street, including Uptown. Previously a railroad corridor, the 5.5 mile trail is now designated for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Just off the byway paths, Lake Calhoun is Minneapolis’ second most popular destination. (After the Mall of America, of course.) An area bustling with activity, residents and visitors flock to Calhoun for summer swimming, biking and picnicking.

Anything But Square
After hitting the trails, it's time to hit Calhoun Square. Entertainment options include ComedySportz and Minnesota-based Famous Dave's BBQ, where you can dish up a plate of ribs and a side of live music. Restaurants like Aura, Chiang Mai Thai and Sushi Tango provide a welcome break from an eclectic mix of shopping venues in the square. Locally-owned specialty retailers like Atmosfere, VState and Bay Street Shoes mingle with national chains such as Kitchen Window and GNC.
